The Real Reason Technology is a Threat to the Accounting Business As We Know it
We know technology is a disruption, but do we really understand what effect that is having on us as accountants?
To understand this we need to see that the rise of mobile devices and sophisticated software have created the ‘real time’ experience. This gives more and more customers access to up-to-the-minute reporting – the pulse of their business has never been more visible. So what does this do?
This has evolved our clients. Their behaviours, their values and their expectations have grown as a result of the speed of communication, and it is this that is driving the need for us to evolve our businesses to match. This speed of business was beyond our imagination when we were first training, and as a result, many traditional practices are out-dated, out-paced and out-performed.
This leaves us long overdue for a major correction in mindset and radical evolution of the way we do business.
Evolution is Hard…
I won’t lie to you. Evolution is not an easy business.
This is because change must come from the very heart of our organisations, from deep within our partners. The things that lie deep within us can be hard to communicate to others. We can struggle to be open to our business partners about our aspirations, our personal goals and our plans for the future.
But these are critical to the health and vitality of our businesses, and there are ways to bring them to the table in planning sessions to add strength to the business and solidify future plans.
In summary…
It seems contrary, but the crux of the technology disruption, and our reactions to evolve with it as businesses do lie within us.
While wearable and mobile technologies have forced major changes to business models over the past two decades, they have also brought us closer together as humans. We can now reach out and have face-to-face meetings with our colleagues on the other side of the planet, attend virtual events to participate in leading global think tanks without leaving our desk, and sometimes our couches.
So perhaps it is not all that hard to see that the way we continue to evolve to meet these opportunities comes from a more personal place.
