Accountants don’t need yet another education product that only tells them how to do it. I believe they need an implementation coach who will actually walk them through the action necessary to achieve the growth they desire.
In the words of Pink Floyd “We don’t need no education”.
I have noticed that most accountants are looking for better ways to operate. This can lead to looking at other accountants to work out what they are doing successfully. What’s interesting is that accountants are looking outwards for the answers that I believe are actually inside them.
Note: This outwards focus is really good for ‘educators’ because all they need to do is keep telling accountants what they are not doing and accountants will feel compelled to buy more educational products.
Several reasons why ‘education only’ models fail to deliver growth results…
Seeking further knowledge can be an excuse to postpone action
The desire to “get it right” drives the quest for more answers before you take action, lest you make a mistake. Mistakes can be embarrassing, but trying to avoid them can cost you in growth opportunities.
Education often lacks practical steps required to implement
Information designed to be delivered en masse is generic, and often not directly applicable to any individual circumstances. Crucially, it lacks the exact process required for your firm’s success because there is no single magic bullet solution that covers all firms.
Generic information can create confusion and/or frustration
This is especially apparent when it relies on overwhelming stories of success about what others are doing whilst being light on its application to YOU and YOUR practice. ie. Does not reference your clients and team demographics.
Educators are not always Accountants
When the creation and delivery of information is not from someone who sat in an accounting practice partner’s chair, it can really miss the mark. In my experience, nothing can replace relevant experience, in any field. Accountants looking for growth need to derive strategies from Accountants who understand growth from the inside. That is those who have directed and grown firms of their own.
