I hear it often… “Sure I’d like to increase profits, but I don’t want to work harder”
This is both common, and completely understandable. Accounting Principals, Partners and Managers are already working too hard. So hard in fact that there is little time to complete day-to-day work, let alone get to higher yielding, more strategic activities.
But there is a way to grow beyond this stage, which is accessible via a strategic mentor relationship.
Let me show you an example…
When Darren Smith first spoke with me about his firm DJ Smith Group he was not convinced of the benefits of a mentor program.
The thing was that his firm already had solid foundations, and Darren saw taking on new clients as his primary way to grow. While more clients meant more revenue, it also meant more work for a Principal who was highly hands-on with his team and client delivery.
“I don’t know if I want to increase profits, because I don’t want to work any harder”
This reluctance was important in defining Darren’s starting goals:
- Growth, (both revenue and profit)
- Working fewer hours, and
- Team “stepping up”.
Defining these goals is crucial to achieving real results for you and your firm.
Wanting to grow, but spend less time working yourself, means that your team must step up to do the heavy lifting required for client delivery.
After an initial chat with me, Darren was able to articulate exactly the goals that really mattered to him. That’s how he became clear on what process he would choose to help support him in achieving those goals.
“I never profess to know everything nor that the practice is perfect, there is always room to improve, and I guess I would benefit from an outside person looking in.”
“Our bottom line has grown 25% in 12 months…”
Next week I share what we did to enable Darren’s firm to have profit growth of 25% within 12 months.
